The Facts
- Breaking the speed limit, or driving too fast for the conditions of the road, contributes to more than 700 deaths and 4,500 injuries every year
- In recent years, going over the speed limit was reported as a factor in 13% of fatal accidents. And exceeding the speed limit or going too fast for the conditions was reported as a factor in 25% of fatal accidents.
- If you hit a child at 30mph they have an 80% chance of living. If you hit them at 40mph they have an 90% chance of dying.
Survival Skills
- As a driver keep to the speed limit and slow down. As a pedestrian only cross when you have time to get across safely.
- Be aware of the speed limits at all times and don’t drive too fast for the conditions. Remember, if there are street lights, the speed limit is 30mph unless otherwise shown.
- Remember: speed limits are there for a reason and applicable at all times!
